Orthodontic Scaler
A sharp-tipped instrument used to remove cement or bonding material from around brackets and bands. May resemble a sickle scaler but shaped for interproximal or gingival access. Not for calculus—used in debonding and cement cleanup.
Scaler / Band Pusher: A dual-ended tool:
- Scaler end: scrapes excess cement around bands/brackets.
- Band pusher end: flat or rounded tip used to seat orthodontic bands firmly onto teeth.
Dual Scaler / Band Pusher
- Essentially the same as Scaler / Band Pusher, often used interchangeably.
- "Dual" just emphasizes that both functions are in one instrument.
Small Plugger / Picker
- Plugger end: small, flat tip used to press or adapt materials (e.g. separators, elastics).
- Picker end: pointed tip for picking up or placing small parts, like elastics or wire ends.
- Smaller tip size = more precision in tight areas.
Large Plugger / Picker
- Same functions as above, but with larger tip sizes.
- Used when more force or wider access is needed (e.g., molar areas or larger archwires).
Summary of Differences:
- Scaler = removes cement
- Band pusher = seats bands
- Plugger = presses/adapts materials
- Picker = manipulates small items
- Small vs. Large = precision vs. force/accessibility
