A cutting instrument used in restorative dentistry, especially for cavity preparation.

Design:

• Flat blade with a cutting edge at 90° to the handle.
• Beveled edge for cutting.
• Available in left- and right-oriented types.

🦷 Main Uses:

• Chop and smooth cavity walls, especially in Class II preparations.
• Remove unsupported enamel and carious dentin.
• Refine internal line and point angles.

Common Codes (GV Black Formula):

• 8    Small-sized blade; used in narrow cavities or anterior teeth for enamel cutting or smoothing walls.
• 9    Slightly larger than 8; good for general purpose trimming and planing in cavity prep.
• 14    Medium-sized, used for planing walls of larger posterior preps.
• 15    Similar to 14, often used in opposing direction (right/left versions); wider blade.
• 51    Larger, robust blade for heavier cutting or gross trimming in posterior areas.
• 52    Often a mirror/opposite of 51 (left/right pair); heavy-duty cutting, posterior use.
