Carver is a double-ended hand instrument used in restorative dentistry to shape, contour, and sculpt direct filling materials like amalgam or composite, restoring the tooth’s natural anatomy

Common Types & Their Use:

Hollenback Carver: Flat, sharp-edged blades. Ideal for interproximal carving and contour finishing

Cleoid/Discoid Carver: Discoid (rounded blade) for gross carving and Cleoid (pointed blade) for fine detail

Hollenback #3 Double-ended, thin-bladed carver with flat profile.

• Use: Carves interproximal and occlusal anatomy in amalgam and composite.
• Key Point: Popular general-purpose carver; reaches narrow spaces easily.

Hollenback #3S Shorter blade version of #3.

• Use: Ideal for finer, more controlled carving in tighter areas.
• Key Difference: Same design, but "S" = Shorter blade for more precision.

Cleoid/Discoid 3/6 One rounded (discoid) and one pointed (cleoid) end; medium size.

• Use: Shaping occlusal surfaces; removing excess amalgam.

Cleoid/Discoid 89/92 Larger discoid and cleoid ends than 3/6.

• Use: Bulk carving and contouring of large restorations.
